SNP MEP cries outside European parliament as Brexit deal passed, asking EU to ‘leave a light on’ for Scotland

TEARS were shed tonight outside the European parliament by SNP MEPs as the European parliament voted to pass Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal.

The Nats’ Aileen McLeod appealed to her European parliament colleagues to “leave a light on” as Brussels debated the UK’s exit.

SNP members consoled one another in a tearful display outside the parliament, embracing as they were serenaded by a bagpiper who played Flower of Scotland and Ode to Joy, the EU’s national anthem.

Following the debate, the European parliament broke into a rendition of Auld Lang Syne and members held hands.

They voted 621-49 for the deal to allow UK to leave without the EU without disruption on Friday night at 11pm.

The EU’s Brexit negotiator was asked if there was a way “back in” for Scots.

He said: “We will see. We will see.

“I will negotiate with the UK government. But I will listen (to) everybody.”

Lib Dem MEP Sheila Richie described Brexit as a “catastrophe for our nation’, adding it was “a personal sadness”.

In a speech in Brussels, she told her European colleagues: “Thank you for the way they have treated us.

“I am shocked but not surprised it took your intervention to protect the rights of the EU 27 citizens and British citizens in the 27 EU countries.”

Meanwhile, Conservative’s Nosheena  Mobarik told BBC’s Glenn Campbell: “It’s onward and upwards, it’s looking ahead to the future to see how we maximise the benefits of Brexit”.

Earlier today, the Scottish Parliament voted for the EU flag to remain flown outside Holyrood.

The vote was thought to be the first ever to go against the SPCB (Scottish Parliament Corporate Body).

The SPCB consists of representatives of all parties and the Presiding Officer, and had voted unanimously to remove the flag when Brexit was passed.

AND, we told you how the Scottish Parliament voted in favour of the Scottish Government’s motion to devolve powers to decide on Scotland’s ability to hold Indyref2, taking the power out of Westminster’s hands.

Opposition MSP’s were quick to call out the SNP on their ‘time wasting’, arguing vital parliamentary time was being given to discussions over a flay while education and public health services were more important issues.

Annie Wells, A Glasgow Conservative MSP asked her Twitter followers:“Does anyone, even people who voted remain, think it’s more important to debate flags than what’s going on in our schools and hospitals? Anybody?”

Prime Minister Boris Johnston has already told Nicola Sturgeon he will not grant her desire for an independence referendum this year, or in the near future.

The SNP confirmed that they will be continuing to draft plans for a second Scottish Independence referendum, in spite of Johnston’s decision.
